A Laughter Workshop (often called Laughter Yoga or Laughter Therapy) is a structured, group-based well-being session led by a trained facilitator that combines planned, simulated laughter yoga/therapy exercises with deep yogic breathing and playful exercises. The main premise of the practice—which allegedly was developed in 1995 by Indian physician Dr. Madan Kataria (who wrote the book called Laughter For No Reason)—is that the brain cannot distinguish between acted, voluntary laughter and genuine, spontaneous laughter. Both types emitt the same level of physiological benefits.
What Actually Happens in a Session?
A few icebreaker jokes or funny props may be used to start the session and ignite some laughter. The laughter in these workshops does not rely on traditional comedy and jokes.
Instead, you progress through several incremental stages:
Warm-Ups: Sessions start gently with rhythmic clapping and movement, body stretching, and simple yoga breathing exercises (Pranayama) to warm up the diaphragm and loosen nerves and inhibitions.
Playful Exercises: The facilitator guides the group through imaginative, creative activities like “laughing food and drink,” the “lawnmower laugh,” or greeting each other with laughing hand shakes.
Laughter & Meditation/Relaxation: As inhibitions fall, playful giggles usually morph into contagious, genuine group hsyteria. .
Wind Down/Relection: Workshops typically end with deep, structured breathing exercises or a silent, guided meditation/relaxation sequence which can last anything up to 30 minutes.
Why Do People Do It? The medical and wellbeing communities increasingly recognize the impact of sustained, playful laughing.
The physiological and psychological benefits are significant and include:
Chemical Release: The brain releases a range of feel-good neurochemicals including dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins.
Stress Reduction: Laughter instantly reduces levels of cortisol (the body’s stress hormone), helping calm the nervous system and give a feeling of calm.
Enhanced Connection: Shared laughter breaks down social barriers, hierarchies at work and awkwardness. This makes it highly effective for team building and community bonding.
Accessibility: It requires no special equipment, athletic ability, or even a natural sense of humor. A spacious private room is best. Some music may be used so normally a Bluetooth speaker is used. A microphone may be necessary for a large group (over 50 people) and room. Laughter workshops are commonly employed in corporate team-building events, well-being days, schools, and health/holistic therapy centers across the UK (including Nottingham and London), and many facilitators run a range of virtual sessions via Teams/Zoom that can be joined from anywhere in the world. This can be ideal for remote workers to bond and do something fun.
