A laughter workshop is often referred to as Laughter Yoga or Laughter Therapy. It is a structured well-being session that combines fun laughter exercises, rhythmic clapping, and deep yogic breathing. Our sessions also include music and some fun movement. As for instance we might start a session with theme music from a seventies detective TV show and act out silly poses!
Laughter workshops are geared towards transcending mood and atmosphere. You do not need to feel happy on the day or be in a good mood at the start or even have a sense of humour to participate. The practice operates on a well-documented scientific principle: the body cannot differentiate between genuine, spontaneous laughter and intentionally playful simulated laughter. Both produce the exact same physical and psychological benefits.
The main reasons to do a laughter workshop may include: Instant Stress Relief: The physical act of prolonged laughing lowers cortisol (the primary dominant stress hormone) while boosting the stimulation of endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, acting as a natural, automatic mood booster.
Immune and Cardiovascular Boost: The rhythmic vibrations from various laughs act as an internal massage, enhancing oxygen flow to the brain, and providing a structured cardiovascular workout.
Social and Group Connection: Shared laughter breaks down social and mental barriers incredibly quickly. Because you are completing silly, playful exercises together, it is a highly popular team-building activity for corporate groups, schools, and community clubs.
Release of Inhibitions: Many adults struggle to play or let go of their professional/social veneer. A laughter yoga or therapy workshop gives you a safe, structured space to be silly, lose yourself, and reconnect with your inner child.
Long-Term Resilience: Regular participation develops your nervous system to recover more quickly from daily stress, helping you to build emotional resilience and a more positive outlook.
Because of their accessibility and inclusivity, these laughter workshops are run in various settings worldwide, from corporate office blocks to senior living facilities and health clinics.
What space will I need? A large spacious, private room where all can stand and move freely. This could be an office, meeting room or hotel event room etc. Air conditioning or windows open is usually recommended as the session does generate a lot of movement and body warmth.
What time of day is best to get maximum effect? Depends on the agenda. The session can be used to kick off a meeting. Morning is a popular option. It may also be used to energise a group, so afternoon after lunch may be an effective time to wake all up after eating. Or the end of the day can be a good way of finishing the agenda on a high before everyone goes home.
